Dennis rader was a fairly normal person for most of his life. No one really know what caused him to do such acts as he did. Rader went on a killing spree, became a serial killer, getting the nick name the BTK murder. This all happened form 1974 to 1991. He took many break between the killings. For example he took a breath when his children were born, simply because he just didn't have the time to plan out and attack. He stated to police that he has sexual fantasies that he needed to please. When he took these breaks and wasn't able to kill and abuse the woman he would use the mask that he wore during the murders, and wear the underwear of his victims.
His first murders occurred on 1974 when he killed four people in one night. During the times of his killings he would hide and send letters to police and local media companies. The first letter, written in October 1974, was hidden in a library. Another one he sent to a witchita bases tv station. In these letters he described the murders in very descriptive details that would be haunting to the normal person. He looked at his victims as animals, not humans, stating when he killed them that he just put them to rest, or put them down as we do with animals. He mostly killed woman that he had a interest in.
The letters then stopped for a while. They didn't come back until 2004, when The Wichita Eagle was sent a letter from someone who signed the returning address as Bill Thomas Killman. This was ironic because if you look at the beginning of each word it spells out BTK. The writer of the letter took responsibility for the 1986 murder of Vicki Wegerle. The letter enclosed photos and details of the murder. It also had a picture of her drivers lsience, which was important because previously the murder had not been one that was tied to the BTK murderer. He made phone called telling tv station and police where certain packages where. He was arrested in February 2005.
He preferred to murder his victims through entering their homes. All of the murders were highly premeditated. He would stalk them before and bring many items with him for the murder and the break in. These things included such items as duck tape, rope, and a screw driver. He would cut off phone line cords to prevent the victims from calling anyone. He would also bring a gun with him. On two of the murders he actually maturated on the bodies. His victims were usually tied up and strangled. He took souvenirs from the households and the poeple such as underwear and licenses, and other personal objects. He also had code names for the murders such as with Kathryn Brights murder he named “Project lights out.” and Vicki Weregild's murder “Project Piano” this was because he liked her playing.
In may, rader plead not guilty to the ten murders. He said he was going to represent himself. In june. rader changed his plea to being guilty. He in court showed remorse and empathy, saying he wouldn't want something like this to happen to his family. This clearly is all just an act to get the outcome that he wants.
