Anyway he told the court, (Referring to his victims as “Projects”) that he would look for victims on his off time, then stalk and eventually kill them.
He continued to to tell the court specific details about the killings. “I had never strangled anyone before, so I didn’t know how much pressure you had to put on a person or how long it would take,” Rader made this statement in court when describing his first killings in 1974. He then described to the court how he chose the victims to kill. He statement was “ Of you’ve reas muh about serial killers, they got through what they call different phases. In the trolling stage, basically, you’re looking for a victim at that time. You an be trolling for months or years, but once you lock in on a certain person, you become a stalker. That might be several of them but you really hone in on one person. they basically become the... thats the victim. Or at least that’s what you want it to be.” He continued to tell the court specific details that were absolutely horrifying. “ The whle family just panicked on me, I worked pretty quick.” “I strangled Mrs. Otero. She passed out. I thought she was dead. I strangled Josephine. She passed out. I thoguht she was dead. then I went and put a bag over Junior’s head.” He later included that he went back and strangled Mrs. Otero again. On another killing he stated that he had “Sexual Problems.” That he “ Forced girls to strip, then hancuffed them and stangled her with a belt. After she was dead he would remove the belt and masturbate over her.
His sentencing was set for August 17th, 2005. Dennis Rader will not face the death penalty due to the fact that the state adopted a new capital punishment law, leaving it illegal for him to be killed in that state. Rader was happy with his defense lawyers stating “ The defense worked with me real well,” “We went over it. I feel like I’m pretty happy with them.” His lawyers asked him if he was pleading because he was guilty, his response was”yes, sir.” His defense attorneys tried using the insanity plea but eventua;;y decided not to proceed saying “From a legal standpoint, we had nothing to work with.” Rader was not apologetic during the hearing, though he seemed apologetic during his sentenicing. His lawyer said that rader basically wanted to take responsibility for his actions. Rader was found guilty and was for the ten deaths. He was sentenced to 180 years in jail.
